Our Story

Mithila Art, also known as Madhubani painting, is a traditional art form that originated in the Mithila region of Bihar, India. With a history dating back to the Ramayana era, this art form has been passed down through generations of women.

Our mission is to preserve and promote this ancient art form while providing sustainable livelihoods to the artisans. We work directly with over 200 artists across 15 villages in the Mithila region, ensuring fair wages and recognition for their exceptional craftsmanship.

Each piece in our collection is handcrafted using natural colors and traditional techniques, making every artwork unique and authentic. When you purchase from us, you're not just buying a product; you're supporting a rich cultural heritage and empowering rural artisans.

Cultural Significance

Mithila paintings were traditionally created on mud walls during special occasions and festivals. These artworks depict Hindu deities, natural elements like the sun, moon, and plants, as well as scenes from everyday life and royal courts.

The art form is characterized by intricate geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and symbolic motifs. Fish represent fertility, peacocks symbolize beauty, and the lotus signifies purity. Each element in a Mithila painting has a deeper meaning and cultural significance.

In 1960s, when Bihar was struck by a severe drought, the Indian government encouraged the women of Mithila to transfer their wall paintings to paper as a source of income. This marked the beginning of Mithila art's commercial journey and global recognition.
